Insider Tips to Skiing Here:
Monarch is one of Colorado's classic smaller ski areas that is always worth a visit. It is located on US 50 between Salida and Gunnison. On a typical season, Monarch receives over 350 inches of snow, making snowmaking not necessary.
The resort has three main areas, the far left one being Garfield. This lift serves many of the mountain's steeper mogul trails, which include Upper No Name, Kanonen, and Upper Christmas Tree. Advanced beginner skiers can also venture on the new Pioneer lift and access moderate runs like Sidewinder and Lower Tango.
Views from the top of the Panorama lift are incredible. One can see well down into the Gunnison Valley or back towards Salida and the Collegiate Range. Favorite expert runs from here include the narrow lift line, Sheer-Rocko, which requires a good base and to the skiers left, High Anxiety.
New for 2006 is Mirkwood Basin. This is accessable from the Breese Way chair and requires a short hike. Skiers are then brought back to the base area via a new catwalk.
